Abstract | This thesis presents a study on the consolidation characteristics of clay. Undisturbed samples of soft and medium clays from Samut Prakarn area were tested in order to investigate maximum past pressure, compressibility characteristics and influence of load increment ratio and load increment duration. Tests were carried out in lever-arm type oedometer. Ma xi mum past pressures were determined by standard loading procedure i.e., doubling the load increment after every twenty four hours duration. The soft and medium clays are found to be normally consolidated clays having OCR values between 0. 73 and 0. 91. The load increment ratio has been varied from a value of 0. 50 to 2. 0 and the load increment duration from 1 day to 7 days. It was found that the compressibility of both the soft and medium clay is not significantly affected by the load increment duration but is affected by load increment ratio. Moreover, load increment ratio variation shows no effect on coefficients of consolidation whereas coefficient of secondary consolidation is influenced by load increment duration but coefficient of primary consolidation remains un- affected. |
