AbstractThe study of strength characteristics of field rockfill materials by laboratory method was limited due to the nature of rockfill materials. Because of this limitation, the Equivalent Roughness Method developed by BARTON was adopted in this study to investigate the shear behav16ur of graywacke rockfill material which was used in the construction of embankment of Chiew Larn Dam in southern part of Thailand. In . this study, rockfill material of nine gradation were subjected to a large scale tilt test by using three size tilt boxes with three different spacings between tilt boxes. The variability of friction angle of rockfill material was studied by specimen with various porosities. The experimental friction angles were compared with the predicted friction angle obtained from the Equivalent Roughness Method . It was observed that the results were affected by many factors. The effect of grain size, gradation, particle shape, porosity and spacing between boxes on friction angle of greywacke material were investigated. The prediction of friction mobilization with strain was also studied and discussed.
