AbstractSubstantial amounts of test data on the behavior of sands have been developed during the past ten years, but a very few published test data on the cyclic resistance characteristics of dense rockfill materials are available. Since rockfill materials represent a substantial proportion of natural deposit and they are often used for rockfill dam construction, it is important to clarify the liquefaction potential of these types of materials. In order to study the undrained deformation and mechanism of pore pressure build up of rockfill materials subjected to cyclic stresses involving changes not only in magnitude but also in direction, a series of static cyclic tests was performed using a cubical triaxial apparatus. The three principal stresses were programmed such that they produce shear stresses in different directions over the octahedral plane in the three dimensional stress space. The results of the study have demonstrated that the stress- strain & deformation behavior of rock-fill material is similar to dense sand under cyclic loading conditions. The effects of inherent anisotropy were noted in the deformation and pore water pressure buildup characteristics. It was also observed that the specimen prepared by vertical deposition exhibited stronger resistance to deformation when the cyclic shear stress was directed horizontally in the octahedral plane than that directed vertically in the octahedral plane. The test results indicated that the failure criterion proposed by LADE & DUNCAN (1975) would be the most appropriate failure criterion for describing t he behavior of rock-fill material.
