AbstractThe information and record from a slope failure case which occurred in Noshiro, Central Japan 1983, during an earthquake of M = 7. 7 in magnitude were collected. The collected diagrammatical data of permanent ground displacements were converted into numerical data by scaling interpretation. Statistical analysis including linear regression and nonlinear regression of the collected data were carried out by S. A. S. package. It is found that the distance between the shifted site-investigation point and the fixed-boundary point is the most essential parameter for the prediction of the permanent displacement of ground caused by liquefaction. The empirical equation based on the results of statistical analysis for the prediction of permanent ground displacement was developed. The accuracy of permanent ground displacement predicted by this equation is verified and reliable for practical purpose. Moreover the application of this empirical equation for a preliminary analysis over a large area is simple and economic.
