AbstractThe finite element method is a high efficient technique in calculation of stress and deformation of material under loading. And nonlinear behaviour of soil, predicted by hyperbolic function representation, is suitable for predicting the actual behaviour of soil. So, the most reliable stress and deformation under any loading can be obtained from the finite element method incorporated with nonlinear behaviour of soil . The finite element program, named ISBILD, is used for analyses in every steps of consolidation. The Bang Na - Bang Pakong highway embankment was analysed as an exampl e. The stresses and settlement from the results of this program were compared with those values calculated by elastic theory. The predicted time settlement curve is in agreement with observed curve when the coefficient of consolidation is increased ten times.
