AbstractThis study forms a part of the continuous research programme at the Asian Institute of Technology on the stress-strain behaviour and strength characteristics of rockfill. The experimental investigations involved attempts to correct the effects of membrane penetration and then to study the deformation and strength of rockfill in the triaxial apparatus. Results of the undrained tests with thin flexible brass plates inserted around the samples confirmed that the membrane penetration has considerable effects on the stress-strain behaviour of the material. A series of loading-unloading drained tests to study the behaviour of plastic strain increment vectors reveals that the plastic potential has a shape similar to that of the undrained stress path for a normally consolidated sample. The material is stable and satisfies Drucker stability ' s criterion. Drained tests with constant cell pressure were also carried out for samples with confining stresses of 5, 10, 20, 35, 60 and 90 t/m2 • The sample experienced dilatancy at low pre-shear stress, whereas at intermediate to high pressures, the sample behaved as loose sand. Some attempts have been made to predict the strains in a manner similar to that originally proposed by the Cambridge Group of Researchers but with some modifications proposed by LEE (1986). It is observed that the strains predicted from the tests results agreed well with the experimental values particularly at the low stress level. Some large-scaled undrained tests were also performed for samples with the larger particle sizes. Though it is generally understood that testing the laboratory specimens with parallel gradation does not give appreciable errors in the predictions of stress and strain, the test results obtained from the large-scaled undrained tests deviate from those of the small-scaled tests.
