AbstractThe study investigate the chemical mineralogical and physical properties of loess deposits, mudstone and grave l bed outcropping in the sections in Khorat province . In study area loess deposit is the youngest. deposit and is found to be ample in the area . Th e results showed that montmorillonite was dominant and other clay minerals occur as traces or found in small amounts in all natural depo sits. The environment of section No .l has a high content of absorbed cations in a sequence o f Na+ , ca+ but low content of k+ . In section No . 2 , the sequence change to Na+ , Mg++ and ca++ while the content of K+ is the same in as section No. 1 . It is noticeable that the environments are favorable for the formation of montmorillonite. The high content of Na+ abs orbed irons and high content of montmorillonite result in a very high swelling potential and high liquid limits in mudstones.
