AbstractStability condition of rock cut slopes of four major hydro dams in Thailand, namely, Chiew Larn Dam, Bang Lang Dam, Khao Laem Dam, and Srinagarind Dam have been evaluated in this study. Not all rock cut slopes were evaluated, only slopes with past problems and failures were studied. Previous available data concerning these slopes were collected together with additional field investigations. Geological mapping, joint survey, and rock mass classification for slopes were performed. Laboratory tests for physical properties and direct shear test of rock cores discontinuities of pebbly mudstone from powerhouse slope of Chiew Larn Dam have been performed. By means of stereographic projection and by using a microcomputer program called SFRAC, the poles of discontinuities, including their concentration, have been analyzed. The potential of slope failures and their failure modes were identified by field investigation and kinematic testing by Panet's net. Critical slopes were evaluated in terms of factor of safety by HOEK & BRAY' s techniques and then compared with HENDRON' s techniques. In terms of risk analysis of slope failure, the remedial measures requirement as proposed by Geotechnical Control Office, HONG KONG, is quoted in this study. The results obtained from this study indicated that some parts of spillway slopes of Chiew Larn Dam are unstable whereas the powerhouse slope after remedial measures is stable. According to risk analysis, the suggested method for failed slopes at spillway area is removing the failure material out of the toe of the slope. This is because the slope failure in the vicinity of spillway area does not effect any life and/or any structures. For Bang Lang Dam, powerhouse slope and left abutment slope need further detailed investigation. The slopes become unstable especially with heavy rainfalls. From risk analysis, if left abutment slope and powerhouse slope fail, they will effect the major road to the dam axis and the irrigation outlet of the dam respectively. A suggested method of remedial measures for these slopes is effective drainage system particularly along the plane of failure. For Khao Laem Dam, left and right abutments are still stable but regular checking of slope is recommended. Penstock slope of Srinagarind Dam is considered to be stable due to no movement of slope.
