AbstractThe Uppper Kotmale hydropower project is located in the central province of Sri Lanka, 90 miles away from Colombo, the capital city, and administratively it belongs to the Nuwara Eliya District. Two dams at Caledonia and Talawakelle are proposed to build across the Kotmale river, in the upstream of the existing Kotmale dam. The project area is mainly composed of hypersthene granite (charnockite) of Pre-cambrian Highland Group associated with hornblende gneiss and quartzite. The geological structure of the project area is mainly characterized by NW-SE aligned anticlines and synclines. Although no large faults have been found, numerous lineaments running along NNE - SSW were found. The geological mapping, core logging, seismic refraction surveys and rock testing were done in order to study the favourability of the proposed major sites such as dam site, the power house site etc . Based on this study, locations are appropriate . it was found that the proposed major site
