AbstractMankind is witnessing an increasing information explosion. The control of societal development in all fields of activity, particularly in administration, planning and decision-making, nowadays is unthinkable without the advancement and application of modern information technologies. This research explores the current information practice for planning activities in Ho Chi Minh City - the largest metropolitan area of Vietnam. It is geared toward identifying problems and specifying requirements which need to be taken into account in designing a microcomputer based development planning information system for the study area. The findings of the the field survey data requirements and on the availability sets of data in planning agencies of all planning and administrative levels reveal a big gap between data demand and supply. This calls for urgent improvements by carrying out new and additional data collection, training skilled manpower, and reorganizing the existing management in information services. In line with the intent of setting up a microcomputer network in planning agencies of Ho Chi Minh City, this study includes some preliminary work forming the first step toward designing a microcomputer assisted planning information system. In addition, necessary follow-up studies are suggested .
