AbstractPakistan faces a set of problems with respect to regional inequalities that are remarkably similar to those in other parts of the Third World. Substantial imbalances of opportunity between provinces have arisen, to a large extent as a result of imbalance spatial development of economic infrastructure, natural resource endowment and past government policies. This study is mainly composed of two types of regional analysis, namely delineation of homogeneous zones and identification of core districts. In case of homogeneous zones, two analyses were undertaken, one on the basis of economic development and other on the basis of social welfare in Pakistan's districts. Analysis on the basis of homogeneity criteria is then used to evolve a socio-economic zoning of Pakistan . In the second type of analysis, functional core districts were identified on the basis of flows among districts. Then an attempt is made to compare the results from these two analyses, for the better understanding of the structure of the space economy of Pakistan. Based on the analysis of the real problem that has been carried out in this research, pertinent conclusions are drawn within the framework of regional development planning.
