Abstract | Despite the economic vicissitudes in the past decades, the stunning growth of international tourism has made it the largest single item of the world trade. Countries throughout the world, especially the developing nations have eagerly embarked upon tourism with great anticipations place upon the acquisition of foreign exchange as well as employment generation and redressing of regional economic imbalance within their countries. However, the understanding of multifarious effects of tourism still lag behind its growth. This study is set off with the major objectives to investigate the effect of tourism on the employment structure ~ the distribution of employment opportunity and the effect of tourism seasonality on employment in tourism industry in Chiang Mai province which is both the growth centre and tourist centre of the northern region of Thailand. The findings show that tourism development in the province effected labour force in the younger age groups most. Moreover, employment opportunities tend to benefit female more than male in the overall. Apart from that, tourism industry has proved to be a good source of employment for people having either lower or higher levels of education, of which, the majority of the employees are satisfied with their jobs. The study estimate that employees in tourism industry in Chiang Mai both the migrants and the commuters who are from the rural hinterland could bring back money to the hinterland more than one hundred million Baht each year. However , it is found that the distribution of employment opportunities are confined largely to people in Chiang Mai city and its inner-hinterland much more than people from the outer-hinterland. Apart from this, it also found that seasonality of tourism has not have a great effect on employment in tourism industry in Chiang Mai, and that, the majority of people working in the industry are enthusiastically interested in having training courses that will increase their knowledge , experience and language proficiency. |
