AbstractThe properties of sugar cane bagasse ash were studied to consider the possibility of using sugar cane bagasse ash as a pozzolanic material. Two experimental programmes were conducted to determine the physical and chemical properties of the ash and the mechanical properties of mortar containing different percentages of the ash. For sugar cane bagasse ash the specific gravity, fineness, setting time, chemical composition and pozzolanic activity index with port land cement and lime were investigated. For mortar, compressive strength, influence of w/c on compressive strength, effect of presence of sugar in bagasse and resistance to acidic attack were studied. The percentage of ash replacement used in the parametric study are 0, 35 and 50 percent. The test results were compared with those of rice husk ash and rice straw ash. Test results indicated that sugar cane bagasse as h can be used as a substitute for cement and can be classified according to ASTM standards as pozzolana class N. For rich mixes the strength development of s u gar cane bagasse ash mortar is found to be lower than that of Port land cement mortar at the early ages . However for lean mixes the compressive strength of sugar cane bagasse ash mortar is found to be twice as high as the control mortar at later ages. The optimum percentage of sugar cane bagasse ash replacement which gives the highest strength is found to be 35% . The presence of sugar cane bagasse ash increment mortar increases considerably its resistance against the attack of sulphuric acid. For hydrochloric acid, sugar cane bagasse ash more or less show similar resistance as ordinary portland cement mortar.
