AbstractA simple and efficient analysis-scheme for investigating buckling instability of trusses by the nonlinear finite displacement method is presented. For investigating buckling instability, each truss member should be discretized into a number of beam elements. So that , each truss member can be idealized as a pin-ended frame member which can resist bending due to buckling. For the discretized beam element with one end pinned the original stiffness matrix for beam elements should be modified. To obtain the modified stiffness matrix of such elements, a technique called static condensation is applied. Direct solution of the tangential stiffness matrix helped by an incremental procedure and a modified form of path-length control technique is applied to trace the load-displacement behavior . A small geometrical imperfection or disturbing load is introduced into the truss structure to investigate in-plane and out-of-plane buckling behavior of plane or space trusses. Post-buckling behavior for different cross-sectional shapes, support conditions and modes of buckling are investigated. Effects of initially crooked members and loading eccentricity, on the post-buckling behavior is also investigated. Numerical examples are compared with existing results. The analysis scheme presented is proved accurate, efficient and versatile.
