Abstract | An experimental program is carried out to investigate the durability of natural fiber mortar using rice husk ash as pozzolana . The main parameters in this experiment are the percentage content of RHA, the orientation and type of fibers and number of simulated aging cycles . The RHA content varies from 0-40% by weight and specimens were made with oriented and randomly oriented jute and ramie fibers. A simulated aging process consisting of alternate wetting and drying is proposed and number of aging cycles varies from 0 to 120 cycles. Test results indicated that by partially replacing cement with rice husk ash it is possible to improve t he durability of natural fiber reinforced mortar and it is found that the optimum amount of RHA content is 30% . One cycle of simulated aging process which involves 30 minutes of water spraying and five and a half hours drying in an oven at temperature of 105°C is equivalent to approximately on and a half month of t he exposure . The post cracking strength of thin plates having oriented fibers is remarkably higher than those of thin plates reinforced with chopped fibers. The toughness and ductility of fiber reinforced mortar are also very high as compared to those of unreinforced mortar. Specimens reinforced with ramie fiber were stronger than those reinforced with jute fiber regardless of t he amount of RHA content and number of aging cycles. |
