AbstractBusiness operations of building construction firms are studied and classified into nine functional fields. Each functional field is investigated to identify the objectives of the operations, the data needed for t he operations, and the results of the operations in the form of information. It was recommended that the data needed for the operations can be organized as a common pool of information and stored in a formatted pattern by employing the database management technique . These data are specified as standardized data. For the building construction industry standardized data are structured into twelve files. They are client, project, competitive , personnel, payroll, vendor, subcontractor, labor-only subcontractor, material, manpower, equipment, project feedback files. The attributes of each files are identified and the relationship between the files are specified. As an example in the study, a control program was written in the dBASE III PLUS to use the standardized data pool to generate information needed for performing cost estimation and work scheduling operations.
