AbstractRapid economic development in Vietnam has been one of the reasons for the growth of its water and wastewater treatment market, amid the boom in urbanization and development of many industrial zones throughout the country. In particular, concern about treatment capability is growing for urban and industrial wastewater. Many new technologies have been applied in the treatment and trading of domestic water, this is an opportunity and also a challenge for businesses operating in the water trading industry. The need for investment in just the urban water supply sector, in order to achieve the government’s target of 100% in 2020 for urban water supply coverage is 284% higher or 341 million USD annually, compared to the investment level that was needed during the last decade, while the ODA sources will likely decrease as Vietnam becomes a middle income country in the near future. Therefore, project cost management should be paid special attention to minimize unnecessary costs, and maximize profits for businesses during water project implementation in Vietnam. The essay focuses on project cost analysis in 10 typical projects of VUCICO, a unit specialized in water business. Most projects apply new technology, so it is inevitable that experience and management constraints are limited. Through cost analysis of these typical projects, the researcher wishes to find out the cause of the cost incurred during project implementation. Thereby drawing experience lessons for VUCICO Company as well as other businesses operating in the business sector of this country.
