AbstractA semi-distributed and physically based modelling system, WATBAL, has been modified and tested on two catchments in Thailand to assess the capability of the model for simulating ungagged catchments . The model accounts for the entire land phase of the hydrological cycle and pay primary attention to the hydrological processes at the root zone level through a distributed, physically based approach; whereas the ground water processes are simulated in less details by lumped, conceptual approach. The model is modified to utilize spatially distributed input data and to account for spatial and temporal variability of rainfall, vegetation and soil parameters. A suitable routing system of overland flow is also added . For the purpose of obtaining experience regarding approximate physical model parameters, the modelling system was initially applied to a gaged catchment. To test the transferability of the model, it subsequently was applied to another catchment without prior calibration, using the actual data base for this catchment and the approximate parameter values obtained from the gaged catchment. The uncertainty of the model parameters were also assessed by again calibrating the model on the second catchment. It was found that the prospects of the model's applicability to simulate ungagged catchment is promising and is in no doubt a good engineering tool for the prediction of monthly and annual discharges . It can be used with confidence for water resources investigations in ungagged catchments.
