Abstract | This study presents a traffic performance of a local area network based on the IFEE 002.4 token bus standard. It was separated into two parts. The first part was to investigate the influence of token holding time on the average packet waiting time , the average throughput and the average transmission line utilization of the simulated network using non - priority option of the standard. The second part was to investigate the main function of priority option of this standard. Both parts were studied under the assumption of balanced traffic density that means every station resided in the network had the same average traffic density. From the first part, it was found that: except in high or medium traffic density and extremely short token holding time , the token holding time does not influence the average packet waiting time of simulated points significantly. Th e result in the second part s h owed that by suitable adjustment of the token holding time a nd the target rotation time , the high priority pack e t s can get shorter a nd more predictable average packet waiting time t h a n the low priority packets . |
