Abstract | The possibility of using ethanol as a supplementary fuel in running a three-cylinder, 25 kW Kirloskar RBV3 diesel engine in dual fuel mode is investigated. Ethanol was aspirated together with the air during the intake stroke by mean s of a carburetor connected to the intake pipe. It was found that approximately 6 0 .4 percent of t he fuel energy at l ow load a nd 3 0 .2 percent of the fuel energy at full load could be supplied by carbureted ethanol . Brake thermal efficiency in dual fuel operation was lower than straight diesel operation at low loads and was higher than straight diesel at high loads . Similar observation was also reported by other researchers using a single and twin cylinder diesel engines. Engine knock was excessive on loads beyond 23.8 kW. The cooling effect of ethanol played an important role in achieving a higher diesel fuel substitution. |
