AbstractSanitation improvements in developing countries such as Malaysia are essential for enhancing the quality of life of the majority as they have a direct impact on the health of the individual. These improvements are essential to any development process that seeks to bring about equity on the basis of the provision of basic needs and the maximization of the human resource potential. The study examines the sanitation sector in Malaysia and addresses issues related to these in the context of the development process. A review of the national strategy and existing conditions is presented with special emphasis on the rural environment. Based on fieldwork various observations are. detailed which highlight the constraints and deficiencies in the sector. Finally a series of wide ranging recommendations are put forth as the basis for implementation and further discussion.
