AbstractBy creatively modifying some of the assumptions, and adding some new features, the application of the linear programming product mix optimization model was extended to include the determination of the corresponding optimal mix of resources. Such type of formulation popularized as "De Novo " by Zeleny has:. been found to be versatile and applicable in numerous situations. The research was therefore undertaken to explore the usage of de novo in various business settings . For companies in operation with existing facilities limiting production out put, de nova can be used to determine the best mix of raw materials and end products. Prices of these resources and outputs do not have to be constant . Applied with step function formulation, de nova can serve as a useful decision making guide on whet her or not additional costs are tolerable and whether opportunities in the for m of decreasing costs are really beneficial to the system. The methodology also blends well with multicriteria decision analysis, being capable of determining minimum resource requirement for achieving a se t of target goa ls. For establishment or expansion projects, the concepts of De Novo and capital budgeting can be used to determine the best mix of facilities to be acquired. Finally, de novo has specific characteristics leading to a heuristic algorithm for resource and product mix optimization. Such findings, with further testing, validation and improvements, can simplify the use of the linear programming product mix optimization models.
