AbstractThis study attempts to estimate availability of an engineering industry manufacturing wire ropes. Availability as a measure of systems ' worth is very important for improving productivity of an organisation. In this study two methods namely time dependent availability and throughput availability are used to estimate single machine availability. Standard avilability f ormula and the Markov chain model were used to estimate the time-dependent availability. The throughput availability of the total plant was also estimated, which is being recently used as an alternative to time-dependent models for estimating production capability of a complex plant. A simulation model has been constructed to estimate throughput availability for different product paths. The effects of buffer level on throughput have been analysed. The programme is developed for IBM- PC which may facilitate decision support for plant managers.
