Abstract | Field data was collected for various tractors operating on 41 different sites in Pakistan for tillage operations to evaluate their tractive performance. On an average, the tractors' drive tyres were found to be over inflated by about 1. 5 times the average recommended inflation pressure (i.e . 96.10 kPa as recommended by the manufacturers) . These high inflation pressures in the drive tyres were also responsible for high power losses and low tractive efficiencies . The average forward speed of the tractors during tillage operations was observed to be 1 .44 m/ sec as against the recommended speed of 1.56 m/ sec to 2 . 69 m/ sec for such operations. All the tractors tested were under ballasted. The average actual weight to optimum weight ratio was 0 .31. Due to under ballasting, the average wastage of tractor power was estimated to be about 70%. Assuming that all the tractors were operated around the average recommended speed of 2 m/ sec, the average actual weight to optimum weight ratio was calculated to be 0.43 . The average power wastage under these conditions was found to be about 57%. The calculated tractive efficiency was only 52% of optimum tractive efficiency, with a maximum value of 96% and a minimum of 27%. |
