Abstract | A draft tube spouted bed dryer was designed, fabricated and evaluated for its performanance in terms of spouting and drying charecteristics of the fresh paddy. The airflow and peak pressure drop of spouted beds were compared with and without using the draft tubes. The spouted beds with draft tubes exhibited lower pressure drops and airflow rates than conventional type thus requiring lower operational costs associated with the supply of air. The inlet diameter of 5 cm was found to be optimum for 30 cm diameter column for spouting fresh paddy and optimum spoutable bed height was selected as 60 cm. The experimental and predicted values of spouting pressures and air velocities based on the equations given by Manurung(1964) and Mathur and Gishler (1955) were markedly different. High values of minimum spouting flow rate and peak pressure drop but low value of spouting pressure drop were obtained for conventional spouted bed. For draft tube spouted bed these deviations were very high. The drying of paddy in a spouted bed could be represented by the modified exponential model. Results showed that the drying constant was related to the temperature of drying air. The head rice yields of paddy dried with the experimental dryer were lower in comparison with the shade dried samples. Therefore the batch drying of fresh paddy in a spouted bed is not recommended without tempering. |
