Abstract | In this study, a model is developed for an Intelligent Computer- Aided Instruction package for teaching a pre- high school trigonometry course. The package is designed and implemented using micro- Prolog language (some routines are in Pascal) on IBM PC with accompanying graphics on the color monitor display terminal. The whole system is driven by a menu (with a 'help' facility) from which the user chooses the required module. Each module comprises one major activity. The response-sensitivity of this package is an improvement over previously described systems and the package can adapt itself according to a student's performance by providing the appropriate teaching strategy (hints, examples, graphics) . Thus, students do not all follow the same path in completing any lesson of the course and a more competent student would finish the course in fewer steps. The Natural language processing capability is developed to make the proposed CAI package function more effectively. Students can set up problems for the package to analyse and solve immediately . A time controller is applied to force students spend their computer time more efficiently and to reduce machine idling. A further feature, the scoring procedure, enables the package to evaluate the student's performance. |
