Abstract | Maritime shipping is an important sector to drive the economic activities trending between countries. Ninety percent of global trade is carried by this mode of transportation. The problem during the Covid-19 pandemic found that there is a container shortage problem around Asia Pacific. A container is the key equipment of container shipping companies to contain their products across the sea. The research aimed to find the root cause for container shortage during the Covid-19 pandemic and the suggested solution to this container shortage situation. The research found that there are five main reasons for this shortage, which is the demand increase during the pandemic, the management among carriers to prioritize the value container or higher freight rate booking, China trade as they need to acute export to recovery their GDP, the delay in vessels that occurred from the port congestion and Suez Canal disruption, and there is lack of manpower at ports and that lead to the movement of a container is postponed. The research found some recommendations for a solution to this container shortage which is involved with shipping companies, the government, and the export companies (Dole Thailand). The basic actions in the short run that shipping lines should do are to reposition the empty container as much as possible and to manage well allocation which comes from the precise forecast demand. The government can create an attractive policy to bring the attention for carriers to drop the container in Thailand. The suggestion is to reduce the port's charge. The export company (Dole Thai) should have a strong team to manage the good allocation which comes from the right forecast demand time to monitor the booking schedule. Also, in case of a surge in higher freight rate, the production should reduce or change to produce the product order so that they can book the container. In the long term, the shipping company needs to improve the booking systems to avoid the overbooking and a lot of cancellation from the old system. The Thai government should go for a hub of repairing the container or national shipping line. For the Dole Thai on shipping department, they should go for technology to reduce the paperwork that can reduce the error from human work as well. |
