Abstract | The purpose of this study is a two-fold application of the general techniques of time series analysis to existing water quality monitoring and to monitoring network design. Deterministic components (linear and cyclic components) are removed by regression estimate and Fourier transform to render the series stationary. Spectral analysis is used to determine cyclic variation (or periodicity). The residualized data are fitted to Box-Jenkins ARMA models. Forecasting and intervention analysis are further conducted in the applications. In the second part of the study monitoring network design is studied. Case study is applied on the optimization of sampling frequency under the condition that sampling variables and stations are selected before the study. Two simple and transparent methods , which can be widely adopted, are applied in the study. A simple, straight-forward method serves as a first level of evaluation methodology using available personnel, sampling program, facilities and data. However long-term change of water quality in a routine monitoring network has become of increasing concern. Sampling frequency optimization based on time series analysis is aimed at the quantification of monitoring objectives as the effectiveness analysis. |
