AbstractThe support requirement of Huai Saphan Hin power tunnel is evaluated with the application of rock mass classification systems for design purposes. The analysis is conducted by using three empirical methods, Rock Structure Rating (RSR concept) by WICHAM et al. 1974, Geomechanics Classification System (RMR method) by BIENIAWSKI (1979), and NGI-Q System by BARTON (1974) . An analytical method, the support interaction analysis is used to determine support requirements for stress induced conditions. An assessment, comparison, and correlation of the design methods ,the recommended support works, and geological parameters involved is carried out. The cost analysis of the support systems resulted in the comparative evaluation of the predicted supports in terms of economy. The result of the analysis indicate that the stability of the tunnel is greatly affected by geological factors and very minor stress problem. There is a close resemblance with the supports predicted by the three methods; however, the intensity of support works varies from section to section. The cost estimate of the supports reveal that the support system predicted by Q system is the most economical .
