Abstract | Soft ground has been a major technical concern for those engage d in construction works in Indonesia. For this reason, great effort s have been made t o overcome t he problems which soft ground causes. In this the s is the principles , method s a nd app li cation of ground improvement mostly use d in Indonesia are presented. Ground improvement methods reviewed include Preloading or Precompression, Stabilization by Additives ( using lime and cement as stabilizers), Grouting and a review on a relatively new method Cakar Ayam foundation system. Five Case Studies have been written, base d on the results of practical application of each methods stated above . From these Case Studies there are several facts that should be emphasized: the differences between theoretical prediction and observed settlement results might be caused by 2 facts, instrumental errors and systematic errors . Th e height of satisfactory result preloading is more shallower depth than preloading can be maintained to get a on soil settlement. The effect of significant on layers which are at on the layer at greater depth. Generally the strength of stabilized soil is increased by increasing the amount of additives and lengthening the curing time . The addition of lime reduces the maximum dry density and in creases the optimum moisture content of the soil . If the time available to improve the soil is quite long , the lime content should not be increased more than 4 t o 5 percent by weight. The use of cement to improve the quality of soil should be determined f rom laboratory tests. An estimate of quantity of cement to be added to the soil can be decided of its classification us in g AASHO Soil Classification System by using guide line available in the literatures. In designing foundation for kilns the soil shrinkage factor must also be considered . Th e new invention Cakar Ayam (Chicken Foot) Foundation seems has good prospect to be used as an alternative in constructing structures on soft ground, but the patent holder still keeps their theoretical assumptions in secret. |
