AbstractApplications of stress-strain models of clay to solutions of problem in practice, include embankments and piled foundation, are studied. To facilitate the study, a microcomputer program named SOFTCLAY is developed using two stress - strain mod e l s: the modified Cam-clay model and the model proposed b y Pender (1977) and (1978). The program can be used to predict stress - strain behaviour of a specimen tested in the laboratory; settlement and induced pore pressure due to load from embankments; a nd effects of pile installation, i.e., pore pressure developed during pile driving, change of state of stresses, strength regain. etc. This study reveals that both the modified Cam- clay model an d the Pender' s model fail to predict the shear strain for stress path wherein the stress ratio is de creased. This is noted both in the laboratory and in the field. An empirical modification of the Pender' s model to predict the stress strain behaviour for this kind of stress path is proposed. Based on this modification, the predicted results, both for laboratory and field case, are considerably improved. The effects of pile installation: excess pore pressure, the state of stress after pile driving and the radial s tress at the e nd of consolidation as predicted by the computer program are similar to those predicted by the finite element computer program developed at Cambridge University. But the predicted pore pressures are smaller than the observed values.
