Abstract | Three cases of instrumentation for deep excavation which cover the various aspects of geotechnical considerations and analyses of the diaphragm wall have been studies. This study shows that the application of finite element method based on data obtained from field instrumentations, provide a very effective means in studying the complex geotechnical problems. Upon the application of this method, the soil and structure parameters can be modified according to the field data obtained, and then use to predict the actual behavior of the retaining system and soil mass in question. Field observations may be used to determine whether the results of the analyses are in good agreement with the actual behavior and vice versa. If the two are found to be in agreement, the analytical results may then be used to extend the results of the instrumentation studies to areas where no instrumentation was installed, or to make influence regarding aspects of the behavior which were not evaluated by instrumentation. Conclusions from this study strongly suggest that instrumentation data may be employed to assess the accuracy of finite element analyses; and the results of finite element analyses may be used to supplement instrumentation data and provide a basis for improved understanding of the braced systems. |
