AbstractIn this study the most widely used conventional seismic refraction interpretation methods were evaluated in simplified complex geologic models. A computer ray tracing program was developed for microcomputers and was used for first arrival times calculation. Evaluation using this indicates that the reciprocal method is the simplest and most convenient method with reliable accuracy for shallow refraction interpretation. Synthetic seismograms for shallow refraction models which have lower velocity zone in refractor were generated using finite difference method. The agreement of first arrival times on the synthetic seismograms and the travel time calculated by the ray tracing proved that ray theory is applicable for wave propagation in the simple inhomogeneous structures. Both ray tracing and finite difference methods were again used to interpret the actual field data. Initial interpretation can be improved by the numerical modelling. Preliminary shallow seismic reflection surveying was carried out in the Bangkok region to test common offset field methods . The seismic section obtained shows that method can be used to delineate the extent of major aquifer zones in the depth range from about 20 to 400m.
