AbstractThis thesis presents the results of an investigation of strength and deformation characteristics of stiff Nang Ngoo Hao clay under Ko anisotropic consolidation condition. Specimens from the depths of 16 to 18.5 m were tested under consolidated undrained condition with pore pressure measurement and consolidated drained condition. The average valu e of the Ko of stiff Nang Ngoo Hao clay was found to be o.67 - 0.69. The consolidated undrained and drained test results show that the effect of anisotropic consolidation over that isotropic consolidation were : 1. The peak of the stress strain curve was reached at considerably lower strain. 2. The value of Ar was found to be lower and its valu e decreased with increase in preconsolidation pressure. 3. The shear strength parameter c and 0decreased both in undrained and drained test. The value s of shear strength parameter c and 0f or Ko and i sotropic test are as follows: CAUKo CIU CA DK a CID c kN/m2 18.5 23 17 17 fl 23.8° 24. 5° 24 .5° 28°
