AbstractThe construct of the Business Model (BM) and the process of Business Model Innovation (BMI) have gained prominence in business academia (BA) as well as business practice (BP) over the last decades both as a conceptual lens as well as lever for managerial action. Whilst the BM and BMI have often been touted as the missing link between Strategy on the one hand and Performance on the other, there has been a distinct lack of focus on their interaction in what we shall term the Strategy-Business Model-Performance (S-BM-P) nexus. The objectives of this study are to: (i) examine the purpose the BM and BMI serve in BA and BP, respectively, by way of an extensive survey of the literature; (ii) explore patterns in the structural relationship in the S-BM-P nexus and identify themes of interest emerging from Principle Component Analysis (PCA); (iii) examine the causal relationships within and across the S-BM-P nexus with the help of follow-up semi-structured interviews; (iv) explain the causal relationships in the respective industries; and, eventually, (v) establish theories of relationship in the S-BM-P nexus in five leading industries in the Thai economy. The research is designed on the basis of a multi-method (i.e. quantitative and qualitative) and open-ended (data-led as opposed to hypothesis-driven) positivist approach. The data were collected from 25 experts (i.e., each has at least 15 years of experience, at least a bachelor’s degree in the domain of expertise, and holding a leadership position in their organization). We selected 5 experts from each industry (5 different industries). Firstly, quantitative research uses PCA where the approach is open-ended so it is bound to yield findings that are of interest to establish the structural relationship in the S-BM-P nexus on the basis of correlations among variables and grouping them into orthogonal principle components that act as distinct themes of interest. In our structural analysis of the relationships in the S-BM-P nexus on the basis of a PCA of primary industry survey data, we identify Operational Eco-System Design, Feedback Loop for Process Improvement and Long-Term Adaptive Mission Vision and Execution as the most relevant themes of interest. In our causal analysis on the basis of a semi- structured interviews, there were some dominant patterns that emerged. Specifically, the Service and Trading industries frequently identified the same patterns of causal relationships. Manufacturing and Real Estate also had similar patterns of causal relationships. However, the Online industry had completely different patterns of causal relationships in almost every case.
