AbstractTheoretical expressions for predicting the spacing and width of the first cracks in pre-tensioned ferrocement elements are derived. A parametric study was conducted in order to examine the influence of the variation in number of wire mesh layers, prestress level , slip modulus , modulus of rupture of mortar, modular ratio , mesh wire diameter and cross-sectional area of one layer of mesh wire on the width, spacing of first cracks and cracking moment. The results obtained from this theoretical analysis indicate that the spacing and width of cracks are significantly affected by the slip modulus , modulus of rupture , modular ratio and mesh wire diameter. Increasing the slip modulus, modulus of rupture , modular ratio and decreasing the mesh wire diameter result in a decrease in the spacing and width of cracks. The cracking moment of flexure element however is significantly influenced by the prestressing force and modulus of rupture. An increase in the level of prestress and modulus of rupture result in an increase of the cracking moment of t h e element.
