Abstract | A simple design procedure for the failure of steel beam columns and frames due to loss of lateral-torsional stability in utilizing eigen value analysis is proposed in this thesis. Effective stability parameters (similar to effective lengths for columns ) are defined at each section of the structure and the check for structural safety is performed on an interaction formula proposed in this study. In these checking , the stability parameters are used in the calculation allowable stresses instead of the vague definitions for effective lengths which are used in the conventional design codes. The values of actual stresses are calculated based on t he so called linearized finite displacement analysis at the initial shapes as compared to small displacement analysis used in codes. Numerical examples are worked out on simple elastic structures and the allowable stability load obtained by proposed method using eigen value analysis was found to b e closer to the exact solutions when compared with that obtained by the existing codes. In this study all the comparison is done with AISC codes. The examples are chosen on elastic structures to simplify calculations and by the fact that if this proposed method is superior for elastic structures surely it has to be superiors for nonelastic structures. A similar study in the nonelastic region is proposed as a future research topic. |
