Abstract | A simple design method for flat slabs subjected to uniform loads is proposed. The slab with a rectangular supporting grid is idealized by independent panels with free edges supported at the four corners by columns. The continuity in edge moments is considered for the interior panels. The limit states of ultimat e load and serviceability are formulated for the rectangular panels. The ultimat~ load is determined using the lower bound theorem of plasticity. Simple design e quations are given for checking the serviceability criteria for deflection and vibrations. By following this procedure the serviceability checks can be carried out very efficiently without conducting an expensive finite element analysis. Results are compared with other design methods and it s hows that the proposed design method is reasonable, and gives an acceptable design. The application of the lower bound theorem of plasticity generally leads to a conservative design. |
