AbstractA computer program using the finite difference method is developed for the analysis of the ultimate .strength of slender reinforced concrete columns with symmetrical sections under uniaxial loading. The slender columns with different end conditions subjected to eccentrical axial load are analyzed taking into account second order effect and material nonlinearity the latter being characterized by moment-axial force-curvature relationships. The analysis yields the deflected shape o f a column at any stage of load up to and beyond the ultimate load . The accuracy and validity of the program are investigate d by comparison of the numerical results with experimental results on slender columns and by comparison with available analytical solutions, the latter shows excellent agreement. The effect of slenderness, shape of cross-section, reinforcing steel content, initial deformation, material properties of steel and concrete, lateral load, and boundary conditions are allowed for the computer program. The capacity of columns is represented by moment-axial force interaction diagrams.
