AbstractThe work reported in this thesis is concerned with the response analysis of cable-stayed bridges under seismic excitation. The CABDAP computer program initially developed at the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology and has been extended at AIT for the present study by allowing varying section and material properties of the deck and tower. The response can be measured from both the unstrained and the static equilibrium geometry. The seismic effects have been shown to be important for the total response measured from the unstrained geometry but the P-A effects have been found to be relatively insignificant . The analysis of the Erskine Bridge with varying section tower shows that the greatest effect concerned the tower bending moment. An alternative harp arrangement bridge has been compared with the Erskine Bridge under the seismic loading and two consequences discussed.
