AbstractEntrepreneurs can solve the problems that exist in the economy and society. India needs more entrepreneurs to solve issues such as unemployment. Many entrepreneurs have been successful despite facing many challenges. One of the major challenges that an entrepreneur faces is access to funding. As per the study done by IBM and the University of Oxford, 97% of the Indian startups are not funded. In the same study, 65% of the venture capitalist respondents felt that startups are failing because of insufficient funding. The objective of the research is to study the impact of individual characteristics of the entrepreneur on access to funding and to find out the factors that will impact access to funding. Survey questionnaires and interviews are used for data collection. The purpose of the questionnaire was to find the relationship between individual characteristics of entrepreneurs and access to funding, whereas the purpose of a qualitative study was to find out the factors that will impact access to funding for entrepreneurs which were not available in the literature. Forty-one responses have been collected from the questionnaire and six interviews have been conducted. The research finds out that education, experience, self-efficacy, and networking play an important role in access to funding; also other factors such as product & idea, team, sector, stage, and presentation skills play a very important role in access to funding for entrepreneurs. The research also finds out that all these factors are important in access to funding, there is no setout or fixed rule in access to funding. The research adds to the entrepreneurial finance literature of developing economies like India. It can be used by the entrepreneurs when they plan to raise funding for their startup to know what are the factors that will play an important role in access to funding.
