AbstractThe purpose of this study is to establish a numerical procedure for design analysis of complex cable network structures with large degrees of freedom. The design analysis of cable network structures has been formulated as non1inear programming problems. The formulation seems to be superior in the simplicity of the governing equation and in obtaining numerical solutions compared with the ordinary structural formulation in which formulation is made as finite displacement problems. Nevertheless, it is not an easy task to obtain numerical solutions for the formulation as non1inear programming problems. This is especially so, when the number of variables of the objective function increases . In the nonlinear programming problem, it is most important to estimate initial values for. the variables to optimize the objective function. The major aim of this study is to establish a technique to obtain initial values which are closer to the optimum Solution. In order to obtain these initial values, a large cable network structure is replaced with a simpler structure, of which structural characteristics resemble those of the original structure to be designed. Analysis is then performed on this simpler structure first and its results are used as the initial values for a slightly more complex structure. the process is repeated up to the structure to be designed. the effectiveness of this procedure has been demonstrated on a number of numerical examples. By employing this proposed numerical procedure, the formulation of design analyses of cable network structures as nonlinear programming becomes much superior to the formulation ad finite displacement problems usually employed in design analyses.
