AbstractDrainage is very essential for irrigated areas having a water table at or near the surface thus effecting the crop yields. The commonly used drainage methods are pipe, ditch and vertical drainage. The selection of a feasible method for a particular area is highly important and for this purpose a graphical model is developed and its applicability is tested by applying it to different barrage commands in the lower Indus Basin. Linderberg' s formula for drain spacing computation and Manning's formula for design of surface drains were used assuming nonhomogeneous anisotropic soil condition and steady state flow conditions. The disposal system for pipe drainage is designed for free and pump flow conditions while irrigation and drainage wells have been considered separately for vertical drainage. The results are presented in the form of graphs for discounted cost in relation to physical parameters. The effects on cost caused by additional surface drainage requirements are also considered. Considering the technical and economical feasibility, it is concluded that the vertical drainage system is feasible for all barrage commands, except for East Khairpur and Mirpurkhas where the pipe drainage system is recommended.
