AbstractThis study presents the development of a two dimensional morphological model for bed scouring due to a clear water jet in a shallow pond. The experiment is made in shallow pool using one size of sand bed material under two different discharges and two different depths . The velocity field and bed elevations are measured to check the numerical model. The flow velocities and bed elevations from the numerical model are compared with the experimental results. The available two-dimensional depth-averaged hydrodynamic model is used to compute the velocity field and water surface elevation by solving the continuity and momentum equation of water. For the morphological model, the sediment balance equation and the sediment transport formula are solved through the finite difference method, namely the modified Lax Scheme. The Meyer-Peter and Muller bed load equation is applied in the computation. Due to nonuniform three-dimensional flow condition and formation of eddies in the scour hole, adjustments are made by using a correction factor for the friction coefficient in the hydrodynamic model and in the morphological model, and another correction factor for controlling angle of repose is applied in the morphological model. The hydrodynamic and morphological models are found to give good prediction for the relevant geometrical shape of the scour hole with respect to time.
