AbstractThe prediction of flow resistance in channel with rough surface has been the problem for many years. The determination of flow resistance coefficients and their behaviour with changes in flow condition become more difficult in the case of flow over permeable bed. Experiments were conducted in a rectangular flume to study the characteristics of free surface flow over permeable beds. Four different types of gravel of uniform size were use d to form the permeable bed of specified thickness. Different discharge rates and flow depths of with variation of bed s lope of the channel were considered. Logarithmic distribution of velocity over the depth of flow could be maintained with the displacement of the reference datum below the gravel bed surface by a distance approximately one half of mean diameter of the medium . The observed values of the Von Karma n constant for four sets of gravel were 0 . 33, 0.31, 0.30 and 0.28, significantly lower than the commonly accepted value of 0 .40 for the case of impermeable beds. From the analysis of boundary resistance in the ma in channel flow it was found that the friction factor increases with the increase in Reynolds number. For a given Reynolds number with increase in relative roughness, d/ D5o or the parameter d/K the friction factor decreases.
