Abstract | The knowledge of suspended sediment due to wave action plays an important role for the understanding of various coastal problems, such as; sediment transport in the coastal zone, and the corresponding variation of beach profiles. Although many theoretical and experimental studies have already been made, the knowledge in this field still remains incomplete due to the complexity of the phenomena and lack of field data. In the present study the profile of mean concentration outside the surf zone is derived from the mass conservation equation using the inherent diffusion coefficient profiles under prototype conditions. The inherent diffusion coefficient profile is analysed from the concentration data using regression techniques. Then the diffusion coefficient profile is correlated with the characteristics of wave, sediment and bedforms leading to the development of empirical formulae for the prediction of the diffusion coefficient profile under prototype waves . The analysis shows that three basic diffusion coefficient profiles namely; constant, parabolic and linear profiles could be used to describe the suspension phenomena of sediment. The obtained parameters describing these three diffusion coefficient profiles are found to correlate well with three independent dimensionless parameters namely; the densiometric sediment Froude number, relative bed smoothness and the relative settling velocity of sediment. |
