AbstractThis study pertains to the development of a microcomputer based decision support system for the AIT scholarship allocation. The system is designed and implemented using the micro-Prolog language. The whole system is driven by a menu from which the user can choose the necessary modules to execute. Each module comprises one major activity in the allocation process. The system integrates a wide range of facilities ranging from routine data handling task up to some functions which require a certain degree of human intelligence. It can also produce report-formatted display, colored bar graphs, and other useful facilities on the screen . In order to make the user aware of what the computer is doing, the allocation module is designed to be capable of answering how and why questions. Hence the system can inform the user about the lines of reasoning it uses in deciding that student A is given the grant from donor B. The system was run using actual data for scholarship year 1983-1984. The output was comparatively better than the allocation made by the donor officer with respect to fair distribution of grants and to the satisfaction of the donors' constraints. The system has also considerably simplified the donor officer's task aside from being able to try a variety of combinations for distributing grants to the different terms and divisions.
