AbstractA performance test was conducted on a 4-stroke, 3-cylinder KIRLOSKAR RB3 diesel engine, operating at constant speed of 1500 RPM and was used to drive an AC-generator, using blends of coconut oil/palm oil and diesel oil containing 20% 40% and 80% coconut oil/palm oil by volume. Tests with 100% coconut oil and 100% palm oil were also conducted. For palm oil, that liquid portion at ambient conditions was the fraction tested. on the average a 6% and 5.4 % higher fuel consumption and brake specific fuel consumption than with diesel oil was observed using the 20% coconut oil and 20% palm oil blends respectively. Increasing the percentages of the vegetable oils in the blends also increases the fuel consumption and the brake specific fuel consumption such that the highest values were with the straight vegetable oil operation. Using coconut oil, however, the fuel consumption and the brake specific fuel consumption were higher than with palm oil. The thermal efficiencies using the vegetable oils were found to be inferior than with the diesel oil but the thermal efficiencies using the palm oil were better than with coconut oil. There was engine knocking with the 80% blends at low loads but was minimized at high loads. With 100% coconut oil and 100% palm oil the knocking intensity increased.
