Abstract | In order to choose a proper service level of piped water: supply for rural communities, cost comparisons of different alternatives vis-a-vis different levels of service are made. Computer aided least cost design of distribution mains is adopted. It is found that, with an optimized network design, the distribution mains required for providing complete house connection in the beginning of the design period itself is not much different from or costlier than the distribution mains required for an initial phase of public standpost supply upgraded to a house connection supply at a later date. The ability of the community of pay for house connections or to pay a regular water tariff or both gives definite indications as to which service level to provide in the initial phase of the design period and economic implications of these indications are analysed. |
