AbstractEight experimental ponds with loadings of 75, 150, 300 and 450kg COD/ha.d were run about 2 months. In each loading one pond was stocked with fish and other without fish. During the experiment total and filtered COD, BOD, ammonia and organic nitrogen, phosphorus, solids, algae, dissolved oxygen, pH, water temperature and alkalinity were measured. In the stocking density of 5 fish/sq m the loading of 150 kg COD/ha.d gave the maximum extrapolated fish yield of 7532 kg/ha.yr. After the experiment the ponds contained high values of COD, nitrogen and phosphorus. Recycling of septic tank sludge into fish found suitable technic for the rural areas of developing countries in tropical climates, where land and labour is available in low cost.
